Finding the right compound in Shanghai can feel overwhelming. There are dozens of options spread across Jing’an, the Former French Concession, Pudong, and beyond. Each has its own character, amenities, and price point.
To make your search easier, we have created a custom Google Map that pinpoints the most popular expat-friendly compounds across Shanghai’s downtown area. This is not a comprehensive list, but a starting point to help you understand where each compound sits relative to metro stations, schools, parks, and the city’s key neighborhoods.
What This Map Shows
The map includes the most well-known expat compounds across four key districts:
- Jing’an District: One Park Avenue, Eight Park Avenue, Top of City, Ladoll International City, City Castle, Territory Shanghai, Hong Yin Li
- Former French Concession (Old Xuhui): The Summit, Chevalier Place, Kingsville
- Huangpu District: The Paragon, First Block, Riverside Garden
- Pudong: Fortune Residence, Shimao Riviera Garden
- Changning: Kerry Residences, Central Residences, Danfeng Yuan
Each pin includes:
- Compound name in English, Chinese, and Pinyin
- Full address
- Link to the compound guide if already published on Shanghai Rentals website
We are also adding international and bilingual school campus locations to the map so that families with children can better plan their commute and school options. This is a work in progress—school locations will be added gradually.
A Note on Google Maps in China
Google Maps is unfortunately not fully reliable in China . There are two main issues:
First, the data is outdated. Because Google services are restricted, the app hasn’t been allowed to update its local business listings or transit data for years. Many businesses that closed years ago are still listed. New subway lines are missing .
Second, there is a coordinate problem. China uses a different coordinate system (GCJ-02) than the rest of the world (WGS-84). This causes a “GPS shift” where your actual location and the map don’t align—often by 100 to 500 meters . In practice, your blue dot might show you standing in a river when you are on the bridge next to it.
What this means for you: This map shows compound locations correctly, but the surrounding environment—restaurants, shops, metro exits—may not be accurate. Use it as a reference for locations, but for daily navigation, consider using local map apps like Amap (高德地图) or Baidu Maps, which have real-time updates and accurate local data .
We are also working on moving this compound map from Google to a local map system. We will update this post once that is ready.
